Kids Fishing Day A Success For Another Year!

“Salmon in the Classroom” is a part of the science curriculum at Saugatuck Public Schools.  Every year, after the sixth graders raise Chinook Salmon in an aquarium and learn about the Salmon life cycle, a bunch of local fisherman (Captain Mike included) take the Saugatuck Sixth Graders out for a day of fishing.

This year we had four kids on board including my daughter, Delaney, and my niece Isabella.  Although winter was hanging on longer than we like and temperatures weren’t that warm yet, we did manage to help the kids catch seven fish!

Spring Fishing Just Around the Corner…

A few nice days and the fishing bug begins to bite. Looking forward to getting the boat in the water. A few people have been calling to reserve a fishing time and we are ready for the 6th Grade Saugatuck fishing expedition. Our wonderful cold weather has done use some good here in Lake Michigan. The water levels will be up much higher than we have seen in years. The Army Corps of Engineers is speculating that water levels will be up a foot or more. Excellent for early river fishing and boating throughout the year. Give us a call to book now. The weekends are getting a lot of attention. Hope to see you out with us for a great trip catching the big ones. We are expecting another big fish season this year.

Second Tough Day in a Row…Had to Fish the River…To Rough…

Strange day today. On the way out we passed a boat at the last corner on the way to the Big Lake that looked like it may have been adrift. It was comfortably stuck in the sand and looked like it was not going anywhere soon. I was not too concerned as I have seen many boats parked here for an overnight. Of course we were more interested in fishing. So off we went. Well as it turned out it was just a little too bumpy to fish offshore. We decided to give the river a shot. Still a few stray big kings in the river. Well as you can see the Coast Guard made a trip down from Holland to inspect the boat. It had made its way off its mooring and floated down the river until it was hung up on the corner. I guess next time I should give the USCG a call. The USCG guys were pretty wide eyed about the trip down. I wonder if they lost any fillings in their teeth. Fishing not too good only a few bites in the river and only caught one Salmon and a couple sheepshead. Continue reading
